Amy Sherman Palladino will never get an own tv channel, that’s for sure, but it’s also unlikely that she’ll get an own show soon. Why is that an issue? Who cares?
Not many cares, but that’s an issue too. Well, some care, but they cannot do anything. They could, but somehow did not. Bunheads, Amy’s next chance to stay in the ‘air’, was cancelled by ABC Family after one season. Bunheads was a creative effort to have that unique Amy Sherman-voice on tv, without copying Gilmore Girls, but the studio did not order another season. Why? Probably not enough people were sitting in front of the machines, but that’s only a guess.
So, why is it a shame? Amy Sherman Palladino is a rare talent who has an extreme personality, a unique voice, a human worldview, and a classic sense of humor. She sees the joke in two ordinary people talking about a toothpaste, a teapot, film or whatever. She writes about human people, yes, they are caricatures, but they feel human.
To lose that voice, that small island in today’s media, and no, I’m not a grandma, is an issue. She was given the chance once, she proved people need it (yes, the Gilmore Gilrs), but that was also over, I think because the studio did not buy her manners. And she could not give in, but that’s guessing too.
If you read this, there must a reason I wrote this, I’d like you to sit down and watch three episodes from Gilmore or Bunheads, and after, try to look at the world differently. She changes everything. If you have a sense for it, yes she will. You might hate it, fine, I don’t care, really. And if next time she comes around, provide her a fucking big number of watchers. We need her, her eyes, her laughs, all that jazz. But you’ll have to watch it. That’s how tv works.
No, she’s not starving. She just have a creative power that would be a shame to leave alone.
